EDP vs EDT vs EDC vs Parfum — What's the Difference and Which Should You Buy?
By Perfume Bazaar Team | Published: May 2026 | 4 min read
You've seen it on bottles — EDP, EDT, EDC, Parfum. But what do these actually mean? And more importantly, which one should you be buying?
This guide breaks it all down simply so you never feel confused at the perfume counter again.
It's All About Concentration
The difference between EDP and EDT comes down to one thing: how much fragrance oil is in the bottle.
More concentration = stronger scent = longer lasting.
Here's how the full spectrum breaks down:
| Type | Concentration | Longevity | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parfum (Extrait) | 20–40% | 8–12+ hours | Special occasions, evenings |
| EDP (Eau de Parfum) | 15–20% | 6–8 hours | All-day wear, work, dates |
| EDT (Eau de Toilette) | 5–15% | 3–5 hours | Casual, daytime, hot weather |
| EDC (Eau de Cologne) | 2–4% | 2–3 hours | Quick refresh, gym, summer |
EDP vs EDT — The Real Difference
An Eau de Parfum (EDP) contains more fragrance oil, which means it lasts longer, projects better, and typically feels richer and more complex. It costs slightly more — but you use less per application, so the bottle often lasts just as long, or longer.
An Eau de Toilette (EDT) is lighter, fresher, and more affordable. It's ideal for those who prefer a subtle presence, or for use in warmer months when you don't want your fragrance to be too overpowering. The trade-off is that you may need to reapply during the day.
"For Indian weather, an EDP gives you the best balance of longevity and value — especially if you're commuting or working long hours."
Which One Should You Buy?
Choose EDP if... You want all-day wear, work in air conditioning, prefer a richer and more complex scent, or only want to spray once in the morning and be done.
Choose EDT if... You like subtle, fresh scents, are buying a casual everyday fragrance, prefer a lighter presence, or are budget-conscious.
Choose Parfum if... You want the ultimate luxury experience, need maximum longevity, or are buying for a very special occasion.
Does EDP Always Smell Different From EDT?
Yes — often noticeably so. The same fragrance in EDP and EDT versions can smell quite different. The EDP version typically reveals more of the middle and base notes — the deeper, warmer, more complex parts of the scent. The EDT version tends to stay brighter and lighter because the base notes don't fully develop at lower concentrations.
A great example: Dior Sauvage EDT smells fresher and more citrusy, while Sauvage EDP is deeper, woodier, and more intense. Both are excellent — but they suit different occasions and preferences.
Similarly, Armani Sì EDP and Sì Passione EDP take the same iconic DNA and push it into richer, more lasting territory compared to lighter concentrations.
How to Apply EDP vs EDT
EDP: 2–3 sprays on pulse points is sufficient. Less is more — the higher concentration means it will project well without over-application.
EDT: 3–4 sprays, or carry the bottle for a midday top-up. Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, and behind the ears.
Pro tip: Always spray directly onto skin, not clothing. Fragrance interacts with your skin's natural warmth and chemistry to develop properly. Spraying on fabric skips this process entirely.
